The Spanish giant Real Madrid are presently in talks with the representatives of legendary Luka Modric, who is out of contract at the end of the season, with both parties intending for him to stay.

Don’t forget that Modric will be 37 in September and will soon have completed a full decade at Real after joining from Tottenham in the summer of 2012. Yet, despite his age, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner remains a vitally important player for Los Blancos and looks set to soon win his third La Liga title.

He has actually surpassed 400 appearances for Real earlier this season and has also won four Champions League titles with the club, one of seven remaining survivors from La Decima in 2014.

This veteran player is not the only Real player with a contract due to expire this summer. Gareth Bale will leave the club when his deal is up, although no decision has been made by the Welshman’s camp as to where he will go next.

Another player named Isco is also expected to bid farewell to the Bernabeu, while long-serving Marcelo could be on his way too after nearly 16 years at the club.

And Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that a differing opinion on salary is what is so far holding up a new deal being completed, despite the willingness for player and club to commit to each other.

Modric also took a 10% pay cut last season when Real’s finances were hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, reducing his net income from €12.5m to €11.25m. His agents are said to want to see a return to the player’s pre-pandemic salary in any new deal or there is no more salary decrease for the player.
